In Philip Roth’s The Plot Against America (which was chosen by the New York Times as one of the best works of fiction of the last twenty-five years), Charles A. Lindbergh, the heroic aviator, defeats Franklin Roosevelt in the 1940 presidential election and, over a period of twenty-two months, proceeds to make good on his campaign promise: to keep the United States out of World War II. Told from the point of view of the author (Roth casts himself as the story’s narrator), The Plot Against America is a thoroughly engrossing look at how the disturbing policies of President Lindbergh—which include signing a friendly treaty with Nazi Germany—almost tear apart one Jewish family living in Newark, New Jersey. The setting and characters are so vividly-drawn that I felt as though I was really there. This is one novel I didn’t want to end.
